Galbanum Essential Oil

In Commerce, Levant Galbanum and Persian Galbanum are the two varieties of Galbanum. The latter is gentle than former one and has terebinthic smell to great extent with substance of Venice turpentine. It also contains fruits with fragment stems instead of bits of sliced roots. Commercial Galbanum has various species of Ferula as a source but the main plant is Ferula galbaniflua, a perennial is an official plant with polish stem, shining leafleats, ovate, wedge- formed, acute and finely notched on the edges. The blossoms of flowers are elite with shiny seeds.
Complete plant abounds with milky juice, exudes from old plants joints. After it has been cut down it get hardens from its base of stem and the finally get by dent made in root. The juice received from roots get hardens and forms the tears of the Galbanum of Commerce. The best tears are pale outwardly about sizing hazelnut and when cracked it composed of clear white tears.
The taste is unpleasant and bitter with strong, rummy and somehow aromatic smell. The common type is an agglutinated mass containing reddish and white tears with consistent firm wax which very well broken into pieces and get soften by heat. When it’s cold, this becomes unanneable and when mixed with leaves and seeds and split in lumps it is quite preferable to the tears as it comprise volatile oil. Concentrated with water it gives quantity of essential oil, approximately 6 drachms to 1 lb. of gum.
It is long-familiar to the ancients and Pliny recognized as ‘bubonion’. Under dry concentration Galbanum produce thick oil bluish in colour which becomes blue colored oil after purification, obtained from flowers of Matricaria Chamomilla.
Its various elements are Gum resin, mineral constituents, volatile oil, umbelliferine, galbaresino-tannol.
Medicinally it can be used as stimulant and expectorant in Chronic Bronchitis. Antipasmodic are viewed intermediate between ammoniac and asafetida for remedying air passages and it is particularly beneficial in pills for various forms in hysteria. Externally it used as plaster to seditious swellings.
