Black Cumin Seed (Kalonji) Essential Oil
Description
The plant has stiff body which is almost erect. Its stems have grey-green colored leaves. Its flowers are grey-blue which are placed along with odd,toothed seedvessels that have some compressed seeds. the flowers yield a strong, fragrance and has pungent taste.
Cultivation
The seed of the onion is sown in the spring season, after the ground gets warmer in temperature. The drills should be 15 to 18 inches apart and the plants are diluted to 10 to 12 inches asunder.
However, you need not to give any special attention till the mid summer season, time when gets ripen. After drying, the plants should be kept at a cool and dry place.
Constituents
The main component of the seeds are a unstable oil and a static oil (1.3 % of the former and 35 per cent of the later part), and an amorphous, glucoside Melanthin, that has been decomposed by diluted HCL into Melanthigenin and sugar. Rochebrune, Toxicol Africaine, contains a strong paralysing alkaloid that is given the term Nigelline. Melanthin is termed to yield the typical physiological action of the most toxicant saponines.
Medicinal Action and Uses
In India, the seeds are treated as the stimulant, diaphoretic and emmenagogue, and are supposed to enhance the secretion of milk. Other uses of the oil are as condiment and as a corrigent or adjuvant of purgative and tonic medicines.
In Eastern countries, these are used for dishes and seasonal curries. Egyptians spread the oil on the bread or put them on cakes like comfits, supposing it be fattening. They are also used in India for keeping away insects from linen- and the inhabitant doctors use them medicinally as a carminative in bowel complaints and indigestion.
