Resveratrol is a chemical compound which is a member of the polyphenols called viniferins. The compound is extracted from the roots of Veratrum grandiflorum. Reseveratraol exists in the nature in both trans and cis- stereoisomericforms with heat and ultraviolet radiation encouraging the trans to cis-isomerization.
Resveratrol consumption reduces the risk of cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and peripheral vascular diseases. It prevents the oxidation of low density lipoproteins (LDL or the bad cholesterol). It can reduce platelet and monocyte adhesion to the walls of blood vessels. Adhesion can create coagulation of blood which in turn will form the clot. Clot can lead to events called embolisms and this in turn can lead to heart failure and brain death and lung problems. Resveratrol is good as a potential anti-cancer agent. Red wine is said to have high levels of resveratrol but it depends on the grape variety. White wine has much less when compared to the red wine. This is because red wine is fermented with the skin whereas white wine is fermented with the skin removed. Sprouted peanuts also contain high level of resveratrol in it. There are strong evidence that resveratrol have strong anticancer action in it for tumors it can contact directly like the skin and gastro-intestinal tract tumors. Resveratrol protects nerve cells from damage and put a stop to the buildup of plaque that leads to Alzheimer's. It has the power to prevent insulin resistance which is a condition in which the body becomes sensitive to the effects of blood sugar lowering hormone and which leads to diabetes.
