Rosemary is one of the most lavishing herbs in the world. Its incomparable fragrance is famed worldwide. Rosemary is also valued for its medicinal properties which can cure several serious diseases.

Rosemary: Description
Rosemary is has evergreen leaves that are about 1 inch in length, straight and dark greenish in color. It has a pungent but pretty aromatic fragrance. The flowers are smaller in size and bluish in color. There are other varieties as well that are silver and gold-striped. But only green leaved variety is compatible for medical uses.    

Rosemary: Cultivation
Rosemary is propagated by cuttings, seeds, and layers, and separation of roots.

  • Seeds can be sown along with a warm, sunny border.
  • Cuttings, generally in August season, 6 inches in length, and planted in a border having shades, two-thirds of the total length remains in the ground, under a hand-glass, will root and be ready for transplanting into permanent quarters the following autumn.
  • Layering may be gamely completed in the summer season by nailing down some of the lower branches under a little sandy soil.

Rosemary grows best in an adequate light, instead dry soil or in sheltered circumstances, such as the base of a low wall.

The plants raised from seed are regarded to be the finest.

Rosemary Constituents :
Rosemary contains tannic acid along with a resin and a volatile oil and bitter principle. The main component of the oil are Borneol, bornyl acetate and other esters, a special camphor similar to that possessed by the myrtle, cineol, pinene and camphene.
