Clary sage (Salvia sclarea) belongs to the mint family (Lamiaceae or Labiatae). This herb has been highly reputed since the Middle Ages. Its name originates from the Latin word clarus that means, "Clear" that implies its role in curing eye complaints. The name salvia originates from the Latin salvere that implies "to save, or heal." Romans used to call it as herba sacca that means ‘sacred herb’. Hundreds of years ago in Germany, people used to input clary sage in the preparation of beer as it used to enhance the euphoric qualities of beer. Linalyl Acetate-56-78%--an ester is the main ingredient of the oil. Sclareol that is a diterpene alcohol are in little amount that is around 4% to 7%. Sclareol is the main element that activates clary sage hormone.

Though the plant is hardy and perennial, it does not lasts for more than four to three years  that is why after every 4 years you have to plant it again It is propagated occasionally by seed, but more frequently by cuttings.

New planting is done by extracting the fresh shoots from almost three to two year plants that grows in spring, it’s the time when they get back the hardness, moisture or to put in the most favorable conditions to grow and penetrate! To prevent any damage in rainy season, expose properly to the sun, one has to plant the beds with equal and safe distance and at a distinct depth. After that all you need its to take care of the plant according to season and add appropriate amount of manure time to time. You may start cuttings in the autumn, when the plants stops flowering.

By tradition clary sage are used for curing eye ailments. Hildegard from Bingen was the one to first suggest it to use this against digestive problems way back in the 12th century

The foremost results of clary sage are anti-spasmodic and relaxing. It is also used in menopausal problems due to its estrogen resembling nature.

Clary sage is non-sensitizing non-irritating and non toxic. One must try to avoid using clary sage while pregnancy and along with alcohol as it exaggerates drunkenness.
